Happy National Donut Day!

With this fun day typically comes a major sugar rush, and all of the negative side effects associated with chemically-laden, processed foods.

So, why not have your sweets, and eat them too?!

You now can with this cleaner, baked vegan donut recipe:


* 2 Cups Almond Flour (or your favorite gluten-free flour)

* 1/2 Cup Organic Coconut Sugar (or sugar variety of your choice)

* 1 Tsp. Baking Soda

* 1 Tsp. Cinnamon

* Pinch of Pink Salt

* 3/4 Cup Unsweetened Almond Milk (or favorite dairy-free milk)

* 3 Tablespoons of Unsweetened Applesauce

* 1 Tsp. Pure Vanilla

* 1/4 Cup Melted Organic Coconut Oil

Chocolate Frosting:

* 1 Cup Organic Dark Cacao Powder

* 1 Cup Coconut Cream

* Sweetener of choice (optional)


Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease your 6-cup donut pan and set aside.

Combine your flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon and pink salt in a large mixing bowl and stir until well blended.

Next, add your milk, applesauce, vanilla, melted organic coconut oil and stir to combine thoroughly.

Once mixed, spoon your dough into the prepared donut pan, filling approximately 3/4 of the way full.

Baked the donuts for approximately 10 minutes, check on them, and then turn the pan around and return to the oven for an additional 7-10 minutes. You will want the tops of the donuts to be slightly golden and your cake tester (or toothpick) should come out clean when tested.

Once finished baking, remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes. Once slightly cooled, remove the donuts from their molds and let cool completely on your wire rack.

For the frosting, in a multipurpose pot, whisk together the dark cacao powder into the coconut cream. If you prefer the frosting to be sweeter, you may add in a sweetener of choice. Bring this mixture to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-high and continue to cook for 3 minutes. Chill for several hours, or until firm.

For fluffier frosting, using a hand mixer, you may beat the chilled frosting to desired thickness.

Spread chocolate onto your prepared donuts and enjoy!
